Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)

Score: 8/10

This movie continues what has happened in the first Transformers movie. The Autobots (the good alien robots) are allied with human to hunt down the Decepticons (the bad alien robots obviously). It seems that the Decepticons are losing, but they have their own plan to revenge their defeat.

At the same time, Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) is preparing himself to go to the college. He has a happy life along with his caring parents and passionate girlfriend, Mikaela (Megan Fox). Unfortunately, this happiness and peacefulness do not last for long because Sam is the key in Decepticons plan. In fact, he holds the secret of amazing power that will make Decepticons invincible, while at the same time, will destroy the earth. Soon, there are battles between the Autobots and Decepticons. The first is trying to protect Sam, while the second is looking for Sam to rip the secret out of his body.

The special effects are incredibly stunning, one of the best I’ve seen so far. The movie is full of action from start to end. The battles are more complex and much more in quantity than the previous movie. You can see the Transformers fight with each other in the bustling city of Shanghai, around the Great Pyramids in Egypt, under water, on the desert, and even in a library.

In general, the acting is good. Shia LaBeouf performance shadows others though. He always successfully and genuinely portrays every emotion that he needs to convey to the audience. There are some humors throughout the movie, which are an important part in this kind of movie. Some humors are good, but some are just over the top unlike the first one where most of them are indeed funny.

The biggest weakness, however, is the story itself. If you watch the movie leisurely, perhaps everything seems plausible and there is nothing wrong with every sequence. On the other hand, if you scrutinize carefully, there are many weaknesses and illogical scenarios throughout the movie. I rarely give a movie a good score when the story is weak, but this one is an exception. The action and the effects are just too cool to be neglected.
