Fireproof (2008)

Score: 9/10

This Christianity themed movie explores the life of Caleb Holt (Kirk Cameron) and his wife, Catherine. Caleb is a captain of a firefighter team. He and his gang have to face many dangers in their profession. He is well respected in the team as a fine leader and he is even considered as a hero in the society because he is willing to save others while endanger his own life.

Despite his apparent success, he always quarrels with Catherine. Finally the quarrels reach a tipping point where it seems that nothing is possible to save the marriage. Catherine has arranged the process of divorce and she even flirts with a doctor in the hospital where she works as a PR.

Caleb will easily give up his marriage if not due to the concern of his father. He asks Caleb to do a 40-day plan to save his marriage. Caleb is obviously reluctant at first, but he decides to give it a try. The process is not easy, but his father keeps giving support and guidance so Caleb can keep his commitment to the plan.

The outcome of the movie is very obvious since the beginning, especially if you know the theme of the movie beforehand. The start is a bit shaky, but it’s getting better over time. Despite its limitation, this movie is very sincere and it has a heart, the biggest one I haven’t seen in a very long time. Everything else about this movie is simple. There is no big computer effect that you will see here. In fact, the acting in some parts appears barely sufficient.

However, it offers great messages (it also has a bit of twist in the end) and Fireproof has successfully touched my heart. Recent Hollywood movies portray profanities that are intended to satisfy our desire. They show gun fights, deceptions, free sex, and other things that represent how this world has turned to its worst. Fireproof, on the other hand, offers completely different things and it is brave enough to flow against the trend. This is what we need if we want to make this world a better and peaceful place to live in.
