Iron Man (2008)

Score: 8/10

This is a highly entertaining movie and one of the best adaptations from Marvel Comics. Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark, a genius and the son of famous weapon manufacturer, Stark Industries. When Stark demonstrates his latest weapon development in Afghanistan, he is attacked by terrorists. He is detained by the terrorists and also suffers a serious injury in his chest due to metal shrapnel. He manages to invent a device to keep the metal away from his heart and he also builds an armor suit that helps him escape.

Back to the civilized world, he realizes that his weapons do not maintain peace, but actually promote wars. He believes that he can act as an agent of change and prevent wars. He recreates the armor suits with some major improvements (including the bright red and yellow color).

Moreover, he also tries to change the direction of Stark Industries towards something more “peaceful”. Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges), his business partner, resents the idea greatly. He and Stark have a final showdown in the last part of the movie.

The best part of the movie is the casts, especially Downey Jr. He is the star and he is perfect for portraying a multi rich and super confidence person. The way he presents one of his latest weapons is just cool. It is also enjoyable to see him develop and try the Iron Man suit. Gwyneth Paltrow is also in the movie as a personal secretary of Stark. She is an efficient person who takes care of Stark’s agenda. The chemistry between her and Stark is excellent. Jeff Bridges is also suitable to portray a man who will not stop for anything. Another major cast is Terrence Howard, a member of U.S. Air Force (not sure about the position) and Stark’s good friend. He appears decently here and there.

The story is straightforward. I bet you can easily guess what will happen in every sequence. Still the movie offers lots of originality as well. Humor is splashed in the right moments and it keeps the movie lively. The CGI looks good and the Iron Man suit is cool.

The final battle is a bit downgraded. I feel that it should be more exciting and offer more action sequences. I also cannot believe that Stark does not suffer major injuries in many occasions even if he wears that super armor suit. Anyway, those two factors do not affect the movie significantly. This is still a highly entertaining movie and I highly recommend it as well.
