I Am Legend (2007)

Score: 7/10

A cure for cancer has been found, but after some time, this cure has turned out to be a disaster. It evolves to be an infectious disease and most of the world’s population is rapidly wiped out. The infected human or animals change into a kind of aggressive meat eating living beings (a typical thing). When these things, let’s say zombies, bit you, you will be infected within a short period of time.

Robert Neville (Will Smith) lives in an empty New York City with his loyal dog. He is a scientist who dedicates himself to find the cure. He’s also hunting and wandering around in the city during daylight since the zombies are vulnerable to ultraviolet. When he finds that his experiment shows some progress, he captures one of the zombies to test whether the cure works for human or not. Surprisingly this kidnapping upsets one zombie and this one brings others to rescue the capture zombie. Robert just realizes that they are actually much smarter than what he thinks before.

Will Smith can be considered as a lone figure here. He successfully carries the movie on his shoulder. We can see how loneliness affects his behaviors and how he tries to keep his insanity in the empty world. His day is very repetitive, but he does everything faithfully every single day.

For a typical zombie theme movie, the story is not bad indeed. Some scenes are eerie and very tense. There is one very sad moment for Robert, which strongly affects him. The last scene when the zombies try to save one of his compatriots is good. On the downside though, there are lots of movies that have the same theme. This fact prevents I Am Legend to reach higher level as it barely offers something special. In general, this is better than your average zombie movies and you may want to add the movie to your “to watch list” if you like this kind of theme.
