X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

Score: 7/10

We’re back to the origin of the Wolverine many years before the event in X-Men series. The story starts with the childhood of James (Hugh Jackman) and Victor (Live Schreiber), two brothers who will eventually become Wolverine and Sabretooth. Due to their rapid regeneration ability, they can literally live forever. They have survived many wars, from the Civil War up to the Vietnam War.

One day, a government official, William Stryker (Danny Huston), decides to use their full potential. He gathers people with special abilities (mutants) to complete a government mission. James, or renamed Logan, does not agree with the way the mission operates so he leaves the group as well as his brother. Afterwards, he leads an honest living and lives peacefully in a secluded area somewhere in the Canadian forest area.

This peacefulness, unfortunately, does not last for long. Victor is back and he starts creating havoc everywhere he goes. Victor is stronger and there is nothing Logan can do to remedy the situation. Therefore, in order to beat him, Stryker requests Logan to undergo an experiment to be indestructible. The government is bonding a special alien metal called adamantium, into his frame, thus Wolverine is born.

However, Stryker actually has a hidden purpose when conducting the experience. He wants to create a secret weapon and Wolverine is actually only a pawn in this much larger scheme. With the help from Gambit (Taylor Kitsch), Logan infiltrates the facility to unravel the mystery and put an end to everything.

In general, the movie is good, although it falls short of my expectation. The story is good and the scenery is incredibly beautiful. The fighting sequences are ok, the last one is the best. There are other fights involving other mutants, but they are not many, which leave me wanting for more. The acting is satisfactorily from all the casts. Jackman and Schreiber perform well here.

I cannot make sense some parts of the movie though. The process of installing the adamantium is incomprehensible. The appearance of Gambit feels a bit unnecessary. It’s only for the sake of pretty pictures. This movie explains how Logan loses his mind in the first X-Men movie and the explanation is just too bizarre. Still, this is a good movie to spend your weekend. It is definitely in par or even better than previous X-Men series.

I wonder if Hugh (Huge) Jackman will be able to be anything but Wolverine now that so much of his career has been consumed by this role

Yeah, but I have to say that he suits really well for the Wolverine's character.
