Mirrors (2008)

Score: 4/10

I was looking for some horror movie, so my friend lent me Mirrors. The movie revolves around Ben Carson (Kiefer Sutherland). Ben is an ex-cop who tries hard to get back to his feet and shrug off his problem with alcohol. He applies to be a nighttime security guard in a deserted building that used to be ravaged by fire some decades ago.

Soon, he notices that there is something wrong with the mirrors. He is experiencing odd visions and nobody believes what he says because he is taking medications regularly to fight his alcohol addiction. Ben does not give up easily and starts investigating further with the help of his friend in the police department.

Then bad things start happening and his family is being threatened by mirrors. Their lives are at stake and Ben has to accomplish a mission to save his beloved family and stop the curse forever.

The story is just plainly bad. The explanation on why the mirrors are possessed by that aggressive behavior is unsatisfying and can be considered downright stupid. The behaviors of the demonic mirrors are also inexplicable and illogical. There is a twist at the very end of the movie, but it does not help to make the movie interesting. It even creates more confusion in my point of view. The visual effects are ok, but the sound effects are disappointing. They were made only to surprise you, which is way out of date.

I planned to degrade this movie and give it a lower score, but I cannot be that harsh because Sutherland performs really well here. We can feel the mixed emotions that he experiences throughout the movie. Other casts perform sufficiently enough for this kind of movie. All in all, this is a movie that you should watch only if you do not have any other options. Perhaps it can be a bit fun if you watch it with some friends.
