Nanny McPhee (2005)

Score: 8/10

Mr. Brown (Colin Firth) has seven children which are … extremely naughty. No single nanny can stand the children mischievousness, and actually Mr. Brown has tried 16 different nannies in total until the nanny agency gives up and does not want to provide more candidates. Apart from his children, Mr. Brown has a problem of his own. His wife just passed away and his rich aunt, who pays monthly rent for his household, demands him to get married with someone within the end of the month or she will stop the financial support.

Out of nowhere, comes Nanny McPhee (Emma Thompson) to this family. She has tremendously peculiar appearance and she also has an oddly twisted staff which produces unexpected things every time she hits it to the ground. Her principle is she will stay when she is needed but not wanted, however when she is wanted but not needed, she will go. The story continues with the visit of the rich aunt, the search for wife, the awkward love between master and maid, and the children wild actions. Nanny McPhee stays unmoved though. She gives guidance to the children and hints of direction to the adults.

This is a great family movie that everyone from every age can enjoy. I believe you can scrutinize this movie from many angles, but if you just sit back and flow with it, you will definitely be pleased and even touched by it. The acting is greatly performed by all casts. Emma Thompson gives an air of mystery as Nanny McPhee, a brilliant performance indeed. Colin Firth performs well as a confuse and affectionate father. Kelly Macdonald is lovely as a caring housemaid. The rich aunt and creepy fiancée are exaggerated, but absolutely proper for this movie. The children deliver the acts decently as well, especially from Simon (Thomas Sangster), the oldest son, which is a very clever boy in this movie.

Everything seems silly and illogical, but strangely it is welcomed. It’s charming and the musical score is absolutely incredible which brings the emotion throughout the movie. It has a sweet and satisfying happy ending although you can guess what will happen at the end.
