Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

Score: 7/10

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the sixth movie in the series. The magic world at last has accepted that the Dark Lord Voldemort has indeed returned. Death Eaters, Voldemort’s crews, have caused havocs everywhere. Even the non magical (muggle) world is affected by their evil tidings.

In the mean time, Harry (Daniel Radcliff), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) return to their school at Hogwarts. The trio has grown up and teenage hormones are working overtime. Love is in the air and there are many puppy love scenes throughout the movie. They are funny and they are delivered convincingly.

However, soon Harry finds that Draco (Tom Felton) and Severus Snape (Alan Rickman) are planning something to get rid of the headmaster, Professor Dumbledore (Michael Gambon). On the other hand, Dumbledore himself is busy in finding ways to destroy Voldemort. Dumbledore needs the help from Harry to unravel the mystery that surrounds Voldemort by getting important information from the new teacher, Horace Slughorn (Jim Broadbent).

This movie is the bridge or the connection before we embark to the conclusion in the final book. This is my least favorite book in the series because sometimes it seems unnecessary. The main purpose of the book is only visible at the very end, while the book itself is over 600 pages as far as I remember.

This Harry Potter movie is faithful to the book. Granted, there are some situations that were omitted, but in general the movie flows smoothly. The movie is easy to follow unlike some previous installments. I praise director David Yates in his effort to bring the book to the screen. The movie is good and it successfully captures the essence in the book. The problem lays in the book itself, which, as I mentioned earlier, is too long and rather uninteresting.

The special effects are brilliant. The acting is ok in general. Gambon and Broadbent perform well here. Grint is funny and makes the movie lively with his antiques. Radcliff shows slight improvements than his previous performances. Watson is ok and I should add that she has grown into a beautiful young woman.

If you are a Harry Potter fan, than it is a must see movie. For general audience, you should know that the movie tends to go to the drama side rather than the action side. The seventh and final book will be divided into two movies. I’m really looking forward for the last one. It will be massive with the final battle looming.
