Defiance (2008)

Score: 8/10

Defiance is a movie based on true story that happened to the Bielksi family during the WWII. Four Bielski Jewish brothers, Tuvia (Daniel Craig), Zus (Live Schreiber), Asael (Jamie Bell), and Aron (George MacKay) avoid capture by the Germans. They manage to flee to Lipicanzia Forest in Poland.

There, they meet other Jewish refugees and their number becomes quite large rapidly. Tuvia becomes the leader of the community. They live in the forest for several years and have to face many tough challenges. They need to find enough food for everyone, fight sickness with limited supply of medicine, stay alive during the cold winter months where food is scarce, and keep running away from German patrols. If necessary, they are forced to battle the Germans to stay alive for one more day.

The movie is an inspiration. We can observe how human beings can become very cruel and without compassion to others. On the other hand, we can see the human spirit that keeps us survive on this earth even if the situation seems hopeless. The movie also portrays the importance of leadership. Tuvia needs to exercise different styles of leadership to keep the community going in spite of various difficulties that they have to face.

Faith is another factor that I capture from the movie. It seems that their survival is highly unlikely. It seems that they have to face impossible challenges to stay alive. However, despite of their limitation, they manage to conquer each impossible scenario. They always find help and motivation when the situation is near the breaking point.

The acting is superb. Craig, Schreiber, and Bell show strong performance here. Each has his own shining moments. Other casts also perform great even if they only have limited screen time. The way the director takes each shot is fascinating. If there is a negative comment from me is the running time. It feels too long in some parts of the movie. I suppose it still can be cut to less than two hours.

All in all, I like this movie because it has heart. It has emotions. It conveys an inspirational message. If they can survive and multiply, so can us against our daily problems.

At least they still manage to get some profits. Perhaps the movie is too heavy for some audiences or perhaps this kind of topic has little interest. Btw I have followed your blog since a long time ago.
