Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009)

Score: 4/10

So, another sequel or I should say prequel movie. This is the third (and hopefully the last) vampires vs werewolves movie of the Underworld series. The setting is hundreds of years before the first Underworld movie. During this time, vampires act as protectors for rich people against the werewolves. Of course they demand very high payments for the protection from the immortals.

All werewolves or lycans are descendants of Williams and they are practically animals because they cannot change into human form again. However, one day a baby boy is born from a lycan and surprisingly he can regain his human form. Victor (Bill Nighy), the leader of the vampire clan, decides to keep him and name him Lucian (Michael Sheen). When Lucian bites a human, that human will become a lycan who can change to human form.

Victor uses Lucian’s capability to develop legions of slaves. Who doesn’t want slaves who are strong and can regenerate rapidly when wounded? The vampires keep the slaves from changing into lycans with a steel spike collar.

Victor has a daughter, Sonja (Rhona Mitra). She frequently disobeys his father, does not attend council meetings, and always roams everywhere looking for some lycans to kill. To make the situation even worse, she has a secret relationship with Lucian.

One night, Sonja (disobeying his father again) goes with some guards to escort human nobles. They are attacked by a great number of lycans. Lucian tries to help her and since he does not see any other ways, he opens the steel collar with his secret key and transform into a fierce lycan. Lucian manages to scare other lycans away because basically they obey his command.

Victor is furious because of the transformation. It means that Lucian has rebelled against his order even if the intention is to save his daughter. He punishes Lucian with 30 lashes and he even wishes to kill Lucian. With some inside help, Sonja manages to free Lucian. Unfortunately, Victor finds out about this and uses his daughter to bring Lucian back. So it begins the legendary battle between vampires and lycans.

Let’s start with some good things about the movie. The overall acting is good. Bill Nighy looks cool as a vampire leader. His gaze is petrifying. Sheen and Mitra are not bad either. The visual effects are quite good as well, although they are not special.

When it comes to bad things, however, there are plenty. There are many illogical sequences. The vampires seem very stupid and weak. I don’t understand how they can keep those lycans as slaves. The fighting sequences are flat and unexciting. They are barely worth the R rating. Don’t be fooled with Kate Beckinsale’s credit in this movie because she only appears for a few seconds.

If you have watched the previous installments, then it is still ok to watch Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. For other cases, it is better to wait for the DVD release. This movie is made only to make more money from the successful franchise, but it fails to entertain me.
