The Happening (2008)

Score: 4/10

The topic of the movie is creative. It is something new and also in line with the current trend. Unfortunately, that is the only good thing about the movie because its delivery is a complete disaster. This is the worst movie by M. Night Shyamalan up to date. I cannot believe how he has fallen from the incredible Sixth Sense to this kind of movie.

The movie starts on a fine day in a New York’s park. Everything goes as usual and many people enjoy their day in the park. Suddenly, something wrong is happening. People begin act strangely and eventually die. Some people think that terrorists have attacked New York, while others theorize that a secret lab is damaged and produced some kind of toxin.

Whatever the cause is, it’s spreading and it affects a wide area in northeastern of the United States. The same symptoms happen in big cities first and then they spread to smaller cities and villages. People become panic and start evacuating the area including our main characters, Elliot (Mark Wahlberg) and his wife, Alma (Zooey Deschanel). They board the train to abandon the area, but get stuck somewhere in the countryside because of power failure. They meet with other refugees, but also start encountering the cause of the disaster.

This is the overall plot and the rest basically consists of people running around avoiding something or people die. In the beginning, the movie is fascinating and it manages to grab my attention for something big. I keep waiting and nothing is happening. In the end, I left the cinema wondering how weird (bad) this movie is.

The story wants to be scary, but on the opposite, it becomes boring. It wants to be real, but it becomes absurd. The acting is mediocre and the dialogue is uninteresting and cannot engage our interest. The refugees suppose to feel panic, but what the movie delivers is like people who are strolling around in the countryside. Some death scenes are interesting, but it’s too few to develop any interest to the movie.

As I mentioned at the beginning, the topic or I should say the message is the only good thing about the movie. It says, “Don’t mess with mother nature”. The movie itself will perhaps make you fall asleep. I don’t know what’s wrong with Shyamalan to create a movie like the Happening. I believe he hasn’t lost his inspiration because he still can make an interesting topic, but the way he delivers his inspiration becomes terrible.
